A brief history

The history of the group starts in 1937. The firm was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda. The corporation was actually is a spinoff of Toyoda`s father’s company, which had previously created his innovative first product for the those days – the Type A engine. Two years later, the Type A engine was incorporated into the Toyota AA.

During the middle of the 20th century, it was the leader in small vehicle production. They were named and sold under the name of Toyopet. As a matter of fact, this was the time when the corporation moved into the USA market under its other name, Crown.

The 60s and 70s hit the company hard with the application of stiff import tariffs on particular type of cars. Meanwhile, it started manufacturing light trucks and eventually it became a top producer of truck parts as well.

The 80s were quite profitable and rewarding. The firm won its first Japanese Quality Control Award. This was also the time, when it decided to change its production by providing more economic vehicles. Such a decision was made due to the recent oil crisis in the USA. This crisis put the American manufacturers in a position to be innovators because they had to find a way to satisfy their consumers. Toyota didn’t want to be left behind the circumstances.

Today, Toyota's active business strategy brought them to own a various panel of brands: Scion, Hino Motors, Daihatsu, Lexus (the most loved brand in the U.S in 2015 according to a survey from the American Customer Satisfaction Index), Isuzu and a stake in Fuji Industries (Subaru's parent company).

Top models

During the 90s, Toyota began making its next steps into providing more compact cars. Thus, the Scion brand came into being, and in 1997 the Prius hit the market. When the firm felt even more powerful, it decided to list its own name on the London and New York Stock Exchanges.

The new millennium did not stop the Toyota Motor Corporation from offering better products for its consumers and to rank on top within OEM companies. The company even survived several Japanese natural disasters, leading the company to choose Thailand as a main supplier. Due to the disaster, it lost more than 150 thousand of its own units. Today, the company invests in the rest of the world and creates plant in emerging countries such as Mexico. The group still is a top supplier even through all these trials. Toyota now plans the future with more prudence after 2014 recalls.
