Do You Have Reports That Explain the Glyphosate Industry?

Good day,

Thank you very much for your question.

The herbicide Glyphosate is used in agriculture primarily for fruits and vegetables, cereal grains, soybeans, and home gardens.  The market is worth $5.5 billion.  It is the main ingredient in Roundup, the world’s most popular weed killer.  Roundup is manufactured by Monsanto which also develops and sells genetically modified seeds.

It is the most common herbicide in the United States, where it was first approved in 1974.  It was approved to kill grasses and broadleaf plants.  However, it will kill most plants and, therefore, must be used carefully.

In the U.S., 750 products contain the chemical, according to the National Pesticide Information Center.  Exposure to the chemical can cause skin, eye and nose irritation.  It also can cause vomiting and drowsiness in pets.

In Europe, Glyphosate was recently re-approved by the European Parliament for seven additional years.  The EU urged a ban for nonprofessional use and cautioned that the herbicide should not be used in playgrounds or public parks, Reuters reports.

Glyphosate’s licensing will expire in June, and many were hoping for an all-out ban on the substance.  A vote on relicensing will be held in May.

Research has begun to suggest Glyphosate may be a carcinogen.   In 2015, the International Agency on Research on Cancer concluded that the herbicide is probably a carcinogen.  The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) disputed this claim.  Critics say the EFSA was influenced by Monsanto.

A poll conducted by Yougov found that two-thirds of Europeans are in favor of a ban, reports The Guardian.  Tests have revealed that Glyphosate can be found in the urine of residents in 18 European nations, and that traces also can be found in 60% of all bread sold in the United Kingdom and 14 of Germany’s top selling beers.

Since 1974, 9.4 million tons of Glyphosate has been sprayed on crops.

Despite the vote by the European Parliament, France has voted to ban weed killers that contain Glyphosate.  It is not possible to guarantee the herbicide does not have a negative impact on human life, the nation’s health and safety agency said.

The state of the global Glyphosate market is examined in Agrow’s Glyphosate – Situation and Outlook.  It also identifies reasons for the market’s growth and the challenges it faces.  QY Research Group’s Report on Global and China Glyphosate Industry also does an in-depth analysis of products and technology as well as research and development and production.

The world’s largest supplier of Glyphosate is China.  This position may change, however, as the Chinese government strengthens its environmental regulations.  For more information on the Chinese market, the methods of production, and trends, consult CCM International’s reports Glyphosate Export Analysis and Survey of Glyphosate Production Technology in China.
