Report 1: Australian Supermarkets:  UBS/AFGC Survey, Analyst Report, May 2015

This report discusses the Australian Supermarket industry using a survey of 66 suppliers to understand the pressures in the market, changes being made and the market outlook. This sample represents 35-40% of the total Australian grocery market.

“Increased competition is driving structural change in the Australian grocery market. Top line growth has slowed to +4% (from +6%); Profit growth is slowing and UBSe will contract in FY16; returns are falling; and strategies, in response, are starting to evolve” (pg 1).

This report also discusses 3 key observations about changes in the industry including growth rates, investments and profits.  The researchers also present the results of the survey including the entry of discounters, retailer/supplier performance, and supplier volume (pg 3).

Supermarket chains discussed include Aldi, Woolworths, Coles and Metcash.  Industry sales for FY2014 are shown as well as historical growth from 1993 through 2015 and forecasted growth from 2015 to 2016 (pg 5-6).

Also, there are graphs that show supermarket sales performance by channel in 2014 (pg 6) such as discounter, MSC, independent and specialist.

Report 2: Supermarket in Australia, Master Grocers Australia, May 2015

This report discusses more detailed about the independent supermarkets and their impact on the industry including market share, number of employees, etc.

This report discusses specifically the major supermarket operators like Woolworths and Coles.  There are profiles of each major operator including the number of stores and sales of food and liquor.  

“According to Nielsen data, about 40 percent of groceries are purchased on special or promotion each week and in categories like bread it is as high as 60 or 70 percent” (pg 15).

Finally, there is a detailed outlook of the future that is primarily dependent on immigration to Australia. There are lists of planned shopping centres by region within the country.
