What is the degree of innovation in the beverage industry?

Good day,

Thank you for your question. We have several reports about the beverage industry, but there is one main report that addresses your question comprehensively.

Report 1: Question and misconceptions about Stevia, PureCircle, January 2014

Although this report is mainly discussing Stevia as a beverage ingredient, there is an entire section on new beverage launches, which could be a representation of innovation in this industry.

This report shows a graph of the top 10 claims for the 33, 786 new product launches in the beverage category globally such as environmentally friendly package, no additives, low/now/reduced sugar, organic, premium, vegetarian, kosher, low/no/reduced allergen, gluten-free, or other.  This graph shows these statistics change from 2012 to 2013.  This presentation also shows that 42% of all beverage launches are for new product, 29% are of a new variety of the product, and 24% are of new packaging for the sample product as well as other launch types.

This report also breaks down beverage launches by region such as Asian Pacific countries, which released 9,242 new beverages with the largest category being vegetarian. The Australian market released only 733 new beverages with the most report claim being an environmentally friendly package.

Then there is a breakdown by drink types such as juice or sports drinks.

Report 2:  Mapping current innovation and emerging R&D needs in the food and drink industry required for sustainable economic growth, Arthur Little, May 2013

This report is most comprehensive and discusses the results of a survey taken from 280 businesses, which asked respondents to prioritize drivers and challenges associated with the environmentally sustainable production of healthy food.  For companies in the beverage subsector, the top driver for innovation was the consumer preference for “natural” foods. Consumer preferences regarding health, ingredients, food claims are significant in their research & development of new products.

It also discusses the drivers for innovation in this category as well as the challenges and barriers such as funding, skills and resources, and lack of demand.

I hope you find this useful, and can see that there is a lot of useful information available through the portal about the beverage industry. If you have any additional needs or questions about our reports, please feel free to contact us.
