The Green Herald Magazine and China’s Daonong Centre for Enterprises has released a list of the Top 100 Green Companies in China, which includes 20 government-owned enterprises, 30 foreign companies and 50 private companies.
Leaders in the three categories were: Vanke, a real estate development company, ranked first for privately-owned companies; China Ocean Shipping Company, a shipping and logistics company, topped the government-owned list; and General Electric led among foreign companies. The list serves to highlight companies that excel in promoting green initiatives through their use of innovation and technology, support for strong business ethics and dedication to sustainable development strategies.
With the Green Companies in China list, the goal is to create a ‘Green Camp’ made up of enterprises that can provide positive corporate examples of how to successfully conduct business while respecting the environment.
The competition to join the list has become just as intense as efforts to stay on it, especially since disqualified enterprises are also advertised. Some 22 companies – including Wal-Mart, Alibaba, Petro China and Tencent – were disqualified because of loss of values, unclear environmental issues, inadequate information disclosure, contradictions between words and deeds, and other poor corporate conduct.
First launched in 2007 by the China Entrepreneur Club, the Green Companies in China list has grown from 20 to 100. This year’s winners were announced during the 2011 Annual Summit of Green Companies. Located in Beijing, the Daonong Centre for Enterprises is a non-profit organization that researches business environment changes, ethics, competiveness, and the balance between business and environment.
