Biodiesel in India - The Underlying Reality
Summary
In the backdrop of surging oil prices and growing emissions, expanded use of alternative sources of energy has become the need of the hour. Governments worldwide are making attempts to ensure an increased share of alternate energy sources. Development of biofuels for transportation like ethanol and biodiesel is a recent phenomenon. However, in the current scenario, biodiesel has been accepted as a very effective clean alternative fuel by most of the developed and developing countries. Countries like the US, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Czechoslovakia, Austria and other European and Asian countries have already put a major thrust on production of biofuels. Fuel tax exemptions and/or production subsidies have become important biofuels policies in more than a dozen countries. Mandates for blending biofuels into vehicle fuels have been enacted in at least 36 states/provinces across the US and 17 countries worldwide at the national level. Most mandates require blending 10–15% ethanol with gasoline or blending 2–5% biodiesel with diesel fuel.
