    The growth of value retailers in childrenswear over the last 10 years has spurred additional volume sales but kept down average prices. Price deflation in the childrenswear sector is greater than in the total clothing market, averaging -3.0% over the past five years, compared with -2.5% for clothing overall

    In 2008 grocers will hold 18.9% of the childrenswear market, representing a gain of £368m since 2003. Grocers have been more successful with their childrenswear offers, and have a far deeper penetration of this market, than menswear and womenswear where we estimate that they hold 7.8% and 6.9% market share respectively

    Woolworths' collapse at the end of 2008 provides competitors with a substantial share of spend to fight for we estimate 5.4% in 2008. The grocers are in a key position to pick up a share of this, (along with the value retailers) because Woolworths' shoppers will be using them for food & grocery shopping already
