Slow but steady economic growth and elevated food price inflation mean a subdued outlook for Algeria's food and drink market in 2017. One bright spot is the mass grocery retail sector, which will be supported by an increasing urban youth population driving investment in formal retail space development.

- Algeria's private consumption will remain resilient; however, with the mounting economic headwinds we believe consumer confidence will come under pressure over our five-year forecast period to 2020.

- Sales of bottled water will increase markedly over the course of our forecast period, rising 16.9% in 2017 and at the same rate on average each year until 2020. Overall, non-alcoholic drinks sales will continue to rise at a steady rate across our forecast period. We forecast growth of 7.3% in 2017, and an average growth rate of 7.9% per annum from 2017 to 2020.

- Algeria has been highlighted by the World Health Organization for the high consumption of sugarsweetened soft drinks by its adolescents, with three in five young Algerians consuming soft drinks daily, compared to 20-40% the US and Europe. A sustained campaign by international health organisations to reduce sugary drinks consumption in Algeria could hit carbonated soft drinks sales in the country in the years ahead.
