STUDY BACKGROUND
The U.S. market for medical diagnostic products and services has been growing strongly in recent years, driven by favorable reimbursement policies for clinical lab testing, increasing awareness of the need for early disease detection and the health needs of an increasingly elderly population. Another factor driving the diagnostic market has been the development of new diagnostic technologies that open the way to new applications, while increasing the accuracy, reliability and relative comfort of existing applications.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The overall goal of this study is to provide the reader with an up-to-date understanding of the emerging diagnostic technologies that will influence the future size and structure of the market for medical diagnostics. Specific objectives include the following:

SCOPE AND FORMAT
This report addresses the U.S. market for emerging diagnostic technologies. Of course, terms such as emerging or new are relative in a rapidly evolving market such as medical diagnostics. Thus, this report pragmatically defines emerging diagnostic technologies as those that are only in limited commercial use and/or in advanced development as of 2012. METHODOLOGY
Both primary and secondary research methodologies were used in preparing this research report. The findings and conclusions of this report are based on information gathered from developers, vendors, integrators and users of medical diagnostic devices. Interview data were combined with information gathered through an extensive review of secondary sources such as trade publications, trade associations, company literature and online databases to produce the baseline market estimates contained in this report.
The base year for analysis and projection is 2011. With 2011 as a baseline, market projections were developed for 2012 to 2017. The projections are based on a combination of a consensus among the primary contacts combined with BCC’s understanding of the key market drivers and their impact from historical and analytical perspectives.
The specific assumptions and approach that BCC used to develop the projections (both near/mid-term and long-term) for each application are documented in detail under the various segments addressed. This way, readers can see how the market estimates were developed and, if they so desire, test the impact on the final numbers of changing assumptions regarding such matters as date of regulatory approval.
One of the approaches used by BCC deserves special mention here. Particularly in the case of diagnostic technologies that have not yet reached the market, BCC used the sales performance of existing technologies that share some of the same functions or other characteristics as emerging diagnostic technology in question as a benchmark for assessing the latter’s sales potential.
