The study examines the financial health of power system companies by classifying them under two broad categories: excellence in financial management and excellence in risk management. The companies were identified from Reuters, Capital IQ, Yahoo Finance and Google Finance, and the financial data were obtained from various secondary sources. An extensive ratio analysis was conducted to rank the companies on the basis of different financial and risk management parameters. Suitable weights were given for each criteria depending on its criticality to the power systems industry. Finally, an overall rank was arrived at for each company, which reflects the performance of the company over the last one year.
Methodology
The companies’ financials are studied for the period 2010 to 2011 and ratios are computed. The ratios are grouped under the aforesaid four major categories with weights assigned to each of them. The ratios were logically ranked. A weighted average score, which is the sum product of the ratios and the weights thereof, was used to rank the companies in the materials industry. The ratios were then grouped into financial and risk management and a comprehensive ranking was given based on the scores under both the categories. The conclusion to this study consists of opinions and recommendations to fund managers, retail investors, and other members of the investing community. This study is supported by comprehensive interviews with the top level management of energy companies worldwide. In addition, extensive secondary research on market trends has been conducted to support the analysis.
