Cooking and eating habits in the UK have changed significantly over the past few decades, with lifestyle changes, migration, changes to household structure, food safety issues, the economy, environmental and ethical issues, and the rise of online shopping all representing key factors in consumers’ food choices. Most poignant, however, has been the shift away from traditional cooking and eating habits in recent decades, with busier lifestyles, a rise in working households and an increase in smaller households leading to less formal meal times and increasingly disparate family eating occasions. This shift has resulted in increased dependency on convenience foods, such as ready meals, pre-packaged ingredients and snack foods, and is thought to have resulted in a loss of traditional cooking skills to some extent. It is also thought to have played a significant part in rising obesity levels, which have continued to increase since the 1990s, with 61.9% of UK adults now classified as overweight or obese — up from 52.9% in 1993.
