Executive Summary
•Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are solid-state semiconductor devices that convert electrical energy into visible light. The semiconductor materials used in LEDs are crystals comprised of a combination of two or three elements such as gallium, phosphide, and gallium indium nitride.
•LEDs are preferred for the advantages they offer over incandescent light sources and for their directionality, low operating costs, long lifespan, and durability.
•The inability of existing light-emitting technologies to meet the demand for better performance has resulted in the creation of high-brightness light-emitting diodes (HBLEDs).
•HBLEDs are composed of various materials including aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), indium (In), phosphide (P), and nitride (N). AlGaInP is used for manufacturing red and yellow LEDs, also known as warm-color LEDs. InGaN is used for manufacturing green and blue LEDs, also known as cold-color LEDs. White LEDs are created by adding phosphor to blue LEDs.
•Conventional LEDs are easier to manufacture than HBLEDs, which require sophisticated, compound semiconductor growth techniques. The most popular method to manufacture HBLEDs is metal-oxide chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD).
•The market is driven by the increased use of LEDs in backlighting.
•The LED market had revenue of $X billion in 2011. It is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of Xpercent in the period of 2011 to 2016.
Market Scope
•The scope of the present study includes a market forecast for the geographic regions of Asia-Pacific (APAC), North America, Europe, and Rest of World (ROW).
•The study includes revenue forecasts for the LED market on the basis of application. The base year for this study is 2011, and revenue and revenue growth rates are given for 2009 through 2016.
•Annual market size and growth rates and revenue by key technologies used and geographic region are also provided.
•The study covers key market forces, such as market drivers and restraints, and evaluates their influence on market growth.
•The study also includes a detailed individual analysis of the applications market, competitive structure, and positioning of key participants in the industry.
•The mobile segment covers the use of LEDs in LCD and keyboard backlighting, indicator lights, and flash lamps. The lighting segment includes the use of LEDs in backlighting and the automotive industry.
•Backlighting includes notebook computers, TVs, and monitors. Automotive lighting encompasses exterior lighting, including headlights and tail lights, and interior lighting, including dashboard, door, and ambient lighting.
•All prices quoted in the study are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise noted.
•With market opportunities for LEDs in various segments, the technology is constantly being improved to yield better performance and a higher lumens output. Performance degradation is a key concern, because LEDs’ performance starts to degrade after percent of their lifespan.
•Some technical problems involve unregulated current output, resulting in complex management and complicated driver circuits. Packaging plays a crucial role in determining performance level and other parameters.
•The study takes into account revenue generated from manufacturers’ sales of LEDs.
