BMI View: The passing of the energy transition bill and adoption of ambitious non-hydropowerrenewables generating capacity deployment targets will improve regulatory clarity in the Frenchrenewables sector, supporting France to become one of our European renewables outperformers over thecoming decade. A cap on nuclear capacity coupled with the decline in thermal power generation will meanthat renewables will be integral to maintaining robust electricity export volumes.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- France hosted the UN COP21 climate conference in December 2015 on the back of having announcedambitious renewables growth targets in November 2015. The government aims to have deployed acumulative 24GW of onshore wind and solar power capacity by 2018, and 36-43GW of capacity by2023.

- A 63.2GW capacity cap on nuclear power in line with the Energy Transition Bill that was passed in thelower and the upper house in July 2015 coupled with the decline in thermal-fired power generation - withcoal capacity being phased-down due to stringent carbon emissions requirements - means that renewableswill play an important role in the French power mix over the next decade. This will in part also be drivenby French aims to sustain robust electricity exports. We note that a total of 2.4GW of interconnectioncapacity to the UK is currently under planning.
