The crude oil industry in China is all set to experience some steady growth after going through years of downfall. After years of slow progress on plans for a crude-oil futures contract that could give it greater influence in global oil pricing, China is now taking some bold strides to make it happen. The recent shift to dependence on foreign oil has changed the exploration and acquisition policies of China. China's oil need overwhelms its internal capabilities. Oil acquisition is now a process of investment in foreign lands and a creation of an internal oil reserve in case of emergency.

In a milestone both for global oil trading as well as Beijing's liberalization of its capital markets, Chinese regulators revealed that they will give some overseas investors access to its commodities futures trading for the first time, saying qualified foreign institutional investors will be allowed to trade crude-oil futures in Shanghai. This exchange could allow foreign investors to settle trades in U.S. dollars, allowing them to avoid using the tightly controlled Chinese currency, while domestic traders would settle in Yuan.

China National Offshore Oil Corp, China National Petroleum Corp, and Sinopec are the top players in the industry at the moment. These companies have largely invested in exploration and development in countries that have oil fields but do not have funds or technology to develop them. CNOOC signed a deal to extract a million barrels of oil a day in Indonesia as well as other projects with Australia. In addition, an oil reserve that will theoretically fill with 30 days’ worth of oil has begun construction in China. However, their oil policy on the world oil market has not been completely clear as to how they will deal with the situation as a whole. Along with emphasizing on defensive oil stocks, there is a significant push to create an offensive oil acquisition program.

Offshore drilling rigs have been approved by all levels of the Chinese government. Experimental possibilities like drilling in the South China Sea exemplify the independent capabilities that China possesses for its oil production and acquisition projects. China wants to replicate the success of West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude futures, the dominant global oil benchmarks, and have a price that more closely reflects China's growing weight in oil markets. China maintains a tight grip on its oil industry, allowing only a handful of mainly state-run companies to import crude into the country.
