• The global market for telecom services has been divided into five main zones: Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia/Pacific and Africa/Middle East.
• The European Union subdivision of 28 nations (i.e. EU-28) also appears. It replaces the European Union subdivision of 27 (EU-27) starting in July 2013, the month that Croatia joined the Union.
• The countries below are detailed within each zone.
• Regional consolidations take into account all the countries of the zone.

Definitions

The telecom sector is divided into four main activities:
•Fixed telephony covers network services operation and basic fixed services (installation costs, subscriptions and communications) and fixed PI telephony services: turnover includes all minor revenue.
•Mobile services cover the operation of radiocommunications networks (radio-telephony and radio-paging): turnover includes minor revenue excluding sale of equipment and interconnection. Mobile broadband turnover forms part of this category.
•Data transmission and Internet services.

The counting method is as follows:
•Traditional landlines are counted in equivalent to channels (PSTN / ISDN PRA or BRA).
•Mobile customers correspond to the number of SIM cards in circulation.
•VoIP subscribers correspond to the number of subscribers using voice on IP technology on an Internet access network with a speed above 128 kbps and of which the quality is controlled by the operator.

The market share calculation method is as follows:
•The mobile market share measures the importance of the mobile operator in a given national market. They are calculated from the actors' published data. They take MVNOs into account (except for the United States).
•The fixed broadband market share measures the importance of the high speed Internet access provider in a given national market. They are calculated from the operators' published data (number of fixed broadband subscribers).

The term "developed countries" designates countries from the following list: Canada, United States, the 28 countries of the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan. By default, the countries not part of this list are deemed to be in the "developing countries" category.

Segmentation of certain services

For the major countries
We distinguish two types of mobile services:
•Voice services refer to telephone communications.
•Mobile data services bring together mobile messaging services (text, multimedia), data and content access as well as generated traffic as charged by the mobile operator.
We account separately for:
•Data transmission services which bring together the operation of networks dedicated to data transmission based on the Frame Relay, X.25, ATM and MAN networks, IP VPN services and leased lines.
•Fixed Internet services which cover narrowband Internet access services (dial-up) and broadband or even ultra-fast broadband (DSL, cable modem, FTTx…).

Historical data is compiled from the following information sources:
•publications of national regulatory authorities, ministries and national statistical organisations
•operators' financial reports
•press releases.

These sources have been compared and supplemented whenever necessary by estimates based on our expertise. We have been able to make revisions to the figures compared to previous editions (new information available, correction of errors, scope adjustments from one country to another).

Our forecasts are based on assumptions relating to anticipated change in the penetration rates for different access modes (percentage of population) in different markets and to changes in average revenue per user.
The assumptions formulated depend on several factors:
•current level of development of the market
•potential of the market seen through the general level of economic development
•national industrial context and policy followed in the development of ICTs
•changing consumer use practices.

Concerning monetary and GDP data:
•Market data by country is presented in national currency and converted into euros (EUR) and U.S. dollars (USD). Conversion rates (average exchange rate in 2011 according to the International Monetary Fund or IMF) are specified in the tab labelled "exchange rates" and applied to the entire period.
•The past histories of national GDPs derived from the publication "World Economic Outlook of the IMF" are presented in national currency (current prices) and converted into USD.
