The Spanish market for concentrated solar power is the largest one in all of world. In the years leading up to 2020, Spanish CSP installations are expected to cross 20,000MW. In 2012, installed capacity in Spain grew substantially as many projects with capacity of 50MW became operational. In order to reduce Spanish energy dependence, which was one of the highest among EU members, the Spanish government introduced a plan for the renewable sector in 2005 through the Renewable Energy Plan (REP), which ran from 2005–2010. With strong government support and lucrative tariffs for solar energy, CSP and PV solar technology installations in Spain have increased. In 2007, the first CSP plant in Spain became operational and Spain overtook the US as global leader in the CSP market. The Spanish government offers one of the most favorable FIT programs in the world, and CSP installations are expected to increase in the coming years.

Abengoa Solar and Acciona Energia are the top players in the industry. Protermosolar, the Spanish Association of Solar Thermal Power Industry, was founded in 2004 with the aim of promoting the development of the Spanish solar thermal industry. Currently it has about 100 members covering the entire value chain of the sector. Protermosolar is also founder of ESTELA, its European counterpart.

The main objective is to promote the expansion and development of solar thermal technology in Spain and in the rest of the world by promoting the development of solar thermal power plants within a stable and adequate regulatory framework for commercial-scale implementation. Promoting technology development and working with governments to establish effective support programs, as well as companies, research centers and universities in order to produce the maximum possible synergies.
