BMI View: Supportive policy and regulatory environment, combined with the government's strongcommitment to diversify the power mix, will continue to attract investment into Thailand's non-hydrorenewables industry over the coming decade. Growth will be driven by particularly strong expansion in thesolar segment, with notable additions coming from biomass and wind sectors.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- Our forecasts for Thailand's non-hydro renewables industry remain optimistic. We expect total non-hydrorenewables capacity growth to average 6.5% across our forecast period, reaching a total of 7,564MW in2025. In terms of generation, the industry will record a similar average growth of 6.4% per annum, totalling 16.3TWh in 2025.

- Thailand will remain a notable solar outperformer in the South East Asia region over our 10-year forecastperiod, with solar capacity totalling 3.7GW by 2025 - driven by the country's feed-in tariff programmeand local manufacturing capacity, which is resulting in strong investor interest in the market. However, the lack of additional procurement plans will see solar capacity growth slow after an initial boom in2015/2016.

- In March 2016, Chinese company Trina Solar has opened a photovoltaic (PV) modules factory in thecity of Rayong. The facility has a capacity to manufacture 500MW of PV modules and 700MW of cells ayear. Subject to overseas demand, PV module production can be increased to more than 600MW.

- In February 2016, a joint venture between Japanese companies Toshiba Corp and Mitsubishi ElectricCorp established its subsidiary in Thailand. The new company, called TMEIC Asia Co, will engage inthe sales of electric equipment and systems, including PV inverters, as well as provide engineeringservices (SeeNews Renewables).
