BMI View: Growth in South Korea's non-hydro renewables industry will remain below its potential as thecountry continues to rely on cheaper coal-fired and nuclear energy generation sources over the comingdecade. Within the non-hydro renewables, wind sector is set to outperform, while biomass will see its sharedeclining.Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- This quarter, we have maintained out forecasts for South Korea's non-hydro renewable industry. Weexpect non-hydro renewables capacity to increase from 2,727 megawatts (MW) in 2015 to 7,299MW in2025, amounting to an average annual growth of 10.4%.

- We believe that wind segment will experience the strongest growth rates in South Korea over the comingdecade, expanding its total capacity by more than three gigawatts (GW) during 2016-2025.

- Netherlands-based offshore wind consultancy Wind Minds expects to sign a letter of intent with KoreaOffshore Wind Power (KOWP) for a partnership to develop a 2.5GW offshore wind complex in SouthKorea. The project will start with a 60MW test stage, with plans to add another 400MW in thedemonstration phase by 2022.

- Coming from a low base, Shouth Korea's solar capacity will average 6.7% growth over the comingdecade, reaching almost 2.7GW by the end of 2025. This will account for 36.9% of the country's totalnon-hydro renewables capacity.
