BMI View:
Over the past few years, Russia's tourism industry has suffered from a number of negative factors. The total number of arrivals has been lower than usual due to ongoing political tensions and instability since the recent development of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine in 2014, which is still ongoing. EU sanctions imposed on the country, alongside a weakened economy, have also limited the amount of investment and development within the sector. Over the medium to long term however, we forecast a much improved outlook. 2016 has seen resurgence in arrivals as tourists look to make the most of the decent exchange rate. Many domestic and international hotel chains have also expressed plans to significantly increase their presence across the country, perhaps with a view to capitalising on upcoming major sporting events such as the 2018 FIFA World Cup. These events will also bring improved travel networks, making journeys to and across the country much more accessible.
