Cloud Services and Big Data Drive the Demand for Network Recording Solutions

This research service provides the key research findings of the network recording market. This market is divided into two product sections, the 1 gigabit per second network recording systems segment and the 10 gigabit per second network recording systems segment. This study features revenue forecasts from 2013 to 2019 for the total market and for the two product segments. The study also provides a list of market drivers and restraints. A competitive analysis is also performed for both the 1 gigabit per second systems and 10 gigabit per second systems product segment to highlight the key participants in this market.

Executive Summary

•The network recording market (NRM) registered revenues of $X million in 2012 growing at X% from 2011.
•The NRM is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of X% from 2012 to 2020.
•The key driving factors for the NRM include a need for larger storage of network data, capturing all packets (without dropping any, especially while retrieving history data for analysis), and storing data for longer periods of time (Xmonths and beyond).
•Standalone test equipment is valued for its several advantages, including single focus areas, pay-for-use systems, and better recording capabilities.
•On the other hand, integrated test equipment offers the option of recording as well as broader network monitoring and performance management.
•The importance of recording systems as a part of network monitoring and performance is gaining momentum with the rise in speed of X gigabits per second (Gbps) and above.
•The XGbps market has been the key focus for several companies in the market. However, today companies are moving their focus to XGbps and have upgraded their products.
•The future growth is expected to continue coming from theX Gbps segment during the forecast period. End users are realizing more and more the benefits of purchasing one X Gbps network recording system (NRS) rather than ten X Gbps NRS to keep up with customer demands.
•The top five market participants in the NRM in 2012 were NetScout Systems, Inc., Network Instruments, LLC., Riverbed Technology, Emulex Corporation, and NIKSUN Incorporated.

Definitions

The network recording solutions covered in this study are used to capture, record, and analyze network traffic at the packet level.
Network recording is a feature of products in the network performance management (NPM), application performance management (APM), and network security forensics markets.
To analyze or interpret a packet (or stream of packets), a solution must first bring them into memory before either disposing of them or recording them to disk for retrospective analysis.
A network recording segment consists of NPM, APM, and security forensics vendors that store packets to disk and allow them to be retrieved at a later date by a user for post-even analysis.
There are Xvarieties of network recording systems: standalone and integrated systems.
Integrated systems typically offer a hardware-based network recorder of some description AND a separate software-based analytics product. The hardware component is within the network recording segment while the software element is outside.
Standalone systems for network recording typically offer a thin layer of software as part of the system that facilitates indexing and searching for recorded network traffic. The entire solution is part of the network recording category.
While most companies have the option to record the captured data, some companies offer real time packet collection and analysis without the option of recording. This study covers companies that store (record) data for future analysis but does not include those who capture data packets in real time without storing them.
Network recorders are further categorized intoX Gbps and Gbps recording systems. Revenue forecasts and market share analysis (on best-effort basis) will also be provided at the segment level. The revenues considered include those of the hardware and those of the software portion of the product (for standalone systems alone and not for integrated systems).
While some companies offer standalone network recording systems, others provide integrated equipment where network recorders form a portion of the entire equipment.
Companies including nPulse (CPX), Emulex (EndaceProbe), Network Instruments (GigaStor), WildPackets (TimeLine), NetScout (InfiniStream), NIKSUN (NetVCR Family), and Fluke Networks (Network Time Machine—the standalone model) offer standalone systems in the market today.
Some of the companies that offer integrated systems include NetScout (nGenius), Riverbed (Cascade Shark Appliance), Network Instruments (Observer), Fluke Networks (Network Time Machine—integrated model), EMC Corporation (RSA NetWitness), Extrahop (ExtraHop platform), and Solera Networks (DeepSee).

The network recording system is segmented into two product segments, namely:
•1 Gbps network recording systems
•10 Gbps and above network recording systems

This global study includes the following regions:
•North America: Canada and the United States
•Europe: Western, Central, Eastern Europe, and Russia
•Asia-Pacific: Countries that are on the western border of the Pacific Ocean (including those on the Indo-Chinese peninsula), the Pacific Islands, and Central Asia
•Emerging Markets: Central and South America, the Caribbean islands, the Middle East, and Africa

The various end-user segments include:
•Service providers
•Enterprises
