Turkey is a major global textile and clothing (T&C) producing country, with a dynamic and generally
well capitalised market focused on serving key geographic industry s – principally Europe, Russia and the
Middle East. BMI ranks it as number 17 in the world in terms of T&C manufacturing value added. In
nominal terms, we estimate that to have been worth US Dollar 20.87bn in 2008. The market has been facing
quite strong competitive pressures in recent years, with the challenge from low-cost Asian producers
forcing a process of restructuring and downsizing. The next two years of recession in almost all its key
export industry s will see more of the same. However, the more agile Turkish industry players will be able to
preserve industry share in key product sectors and position themselves for the recovery.
Overall Turkish T&C value added will fall by 12.0% in 2009 and by 0.6% in 2010, reflecting very
difficult international economic conditions. We see a moderate recovery from 2011, with growth of 1.9%.
The market ’s trade performance will also reflect the especially difficult international economic situation
and the collapse of European demand. T&C exports will drop 10.0% to US Dollar 24.97bn, while imports will
fall by 17.0% to US Dollar 7.38bn. As a result, the country will register a T&C trade surplus of US Dollar 17.59, a
little lower than in 2008.
