The Greek construction industry is expected to recover in 2016, growing by 1.0% y-o-y, with an average annual real growth of 3.1% over 2016-2025. Residential and non-residential building industry and infrastructure sector will both experience significant growth in 2016, contributing each of them an equal share of 50% to the total construction value. This substantial growth will be partly caused through the implementation of a couple of non-residential projects as well as the construction of the TAP pipeline. Despite the ongoing political uncertainty in the country, we believe the majority of the projects will proceed as they are prerequisites for the next EUR2.8bn tranche of the loan agreement via the successful completion of the imminent second bailout review in September 2016.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- The European Commission temporary suspended all projects funded through the European Regional Developments Funds for the period 2014-2020, claiming there is a suspicion that a construction cartel has been exploiting the funds flowing into Greece.

- In May 2016, the Greek government stated that a fund, known as 'Hellenic Company for Assets and Participation (EDIS)', will claim ownership of all assets of the Greek state, including 70,000 real estate properties, all major state-owned companies (such as utility companies), public transport, state shares in banks as well as assets of Hellenic Republic Assets Development Fund (TAIPED), which will act as its subsidiary. The new entity will be based in Athens, with a charter envisioning its existence for 99 years and with an initial share capital of EUR40mn (Naftemporiki). The formation of supervisory council, which will appoint the fund's administrative board, has not taken place so far.
