The hydropower market in Norway has been on a decline domestically and the industry has increasingly had to rely on exports in order to survive. Today, Norwegian hydropower companies export technology and equipment to the entire world, but the most important export market is in the developing countries. In 2012, Norway ranked eighth worldwide in terms of hydropower cumulative installed capacity.

Norway has an active hydropower market. Besides the development of small-scale (less than 10 MW) hydropower plants, the hydropower companies there also focus on the restoration and advancement of existing plants. The Norwegian hydropower industry has lobbied hard for development support to the export of Norwegian hydropower technology. Increased competitive pressure in Norway have created increased acceptance of this demand, and Norwegian development aid is gradually shifting towards supporting Norwegian industry.

The country is expected to face power issues in future as most of the power demand is met by hydropower. Due to a shortage of rainfall since last two years, hydro supply has subdued whereas the power demand is on the rise. Water reservoirs in Norway for hydropower generation are apparently on an average 21% full, whereas in the past this annual average was 40%. This issue has also discouraged the European Union (EU) to achieve the 2020 renewable energy target.

Statkraft, E-CO Energi AS and Norsk Hydro ASA are the biggest players in the industry.
