Visits to tourist attractions within the UK continued to increase in 2011, rising by 7.3% to 232 million between 2010 and 2011. At the same time, expenditure on admissions to visitor attractions continued to observe double-digit growth in 2011, with figures rising by 13.9%, with Key Note estimating further growth of 14.1% in 2012. In spite of the strong growth observed in expenditure on admission tickets during the past few years, the upwards trend has mainly been down to significant price increases in entry fees to paid-for attractions, with more and more amusements struggling to keep afloat following the double-dip recession. In fact, the growth in visitor numbers to attractions in the UK observed between 2007 and 2011 have been mainly down to a rise in attendance at free attractions, such as museums and heritage sites, with many consumers opting to visit attractions that offer free entry in order to save money due to the problematic economic conditions that have affected many households in recent years.
