Increasing Needs of Clinical Systems Expands EMR Bringing Brazil to the Forefront in Latin America

Brazilian EMR penetration, considering every implementation level—from basic, with just electronic prescriptions, to complex, with different clincial modules—reaches 8% of total local healthcare institutions. There are few sole EMR vendors in the market. The local healthcare information technology (HC IT) market stage drives providers to offer EMR as a module pack within a hospital information system (HIS) solution. Research shows that an EMR module price represents 50–70% of the total HIS solution price, due to its higher customization requirements. This study focuses on the 11 companies with CFM/Sbis certification. However, total market revenue and market share include non-certified solutions.

Executive Summary

•Electronic medical records (EMR) are unique electronic documents composed of information, signals, and registered images sourced from facts, events, and situations pertaining to patient health and care.
•Brazilian EMR penetration, considering every implementation level—from basic, with just electronic prescriptions, to complex, with different clincial modules—reaches X% of total local healthcare institutions.
•There are few sole EMR vendors in the market. The local healthcare information technology (HC IT) market stage drives providers to offer EMR as a module pack within a hospital information system (HIS) solution.
•Research shows that an EMR module price represents X% to X% of the total HIS solution price, due to its higher customization requirements.
•As many different companies offer basic EMR systems, this study focuses on the 11 companies that have the Conselho Federal de Medicina (CFM), or Federal Council of Medicine, and the Sociedade Brasileira de Informática em Saúde (Sbis), or Brazilian Society of Health Informatics, certification, which is an index for more developed local solutions. However, total market revenue and market share include non-certified solutions.
•Certified CFM/Sbis solutions represent X% of total market revenue.
•The Brazilian EMR market amounted to $Xmillion in 2012 and is expected to reach $Xmillion by 2018, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of X% from 2012 to 2018. Note that revenues are attributed only to the above-mentioned segments that have been covered in this study.
•There are several factors that could restrain growth of the EMR market in Brazil. These include a lack of a specialized workforce enabled to manage electronic rather than paper records, the absence of legislation regarding EMR usage, and the deficiency of interoperability standards among HC solutions from different providers.
•The purpose of this study is to analyze the Brazilian EMR market with regard to revenue, installed base, market share, and competitive scenario.
•This Frost & Sullivan study includes a consolidated sum of the EMR healthcare market, segmented by low, middle, and high complexity solutions.

CEO’s Perspective

1. HC IT is one of the fastest growing segments in the Brazilian healthcare market.
2. Brazil lags behind developed markets in terms of EMR implementation.
3. Multiple competitive and investment factors are now expanding EMR implementation in country.
4. A mix of local and multinational EMR vendors and system integrators are currently in or exploring market entry.
5. An understanding of local laws and regulations related to EMR is important for vendors and institutions alike.

Introduction

There are approximately X local IT companies offering some kind of EMR implementation for healthcare insitutions in Brazil. However, our research and considerations follow the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine defintion of an EMR as: “an unique document compounding a set of informations, signals, and registered images, generated from facts, events, and situations regarding patient health and any provided assistance.”

In 2010, the CFM and Sbis started to provide a standard control program for EMR solutions in order to certify the solutions that best met their requirements. This certification, despite not being compulsory for EMR providers, is best known as a first criteria for the most reliable and competitive local systems. Frost & Sullivan research, therefore, has mainly considered the X Sbis/CFM certified companies in this study.

As the Brazilian HC IT market is in a developing stage, wherein norms for HC IT interoperability are nonexistent, EMR solutions are mainly sold as a part, or module, of an HIS solution. In Brazil, X% of healthcare institutions purchase management solutions bundled from the same vendor (i.e., ERP, HIS, and EMR in the same solution). Private insurance plans’ market relevance drives solutions to be mainly focused on ERP, due to its preference for cost-control solutions in the private insurance market.
