Hydropower in Switzerland one of the major sources of electricity generation and around 12% of the hydropower generation of the country comes from facilities situated on water bodies along its borders. Thanks to its topography and high levels of annual rainfall, Switzerland has ideal conditions for the utilization of hydropower. Two-thirds of hydroelectricity is generated in the mountain cantons of Uri, Grisons, Ticino and Valais, while Aargau and Bern also generate significant quantities. Roughly 12% of Switzerland's hydropower generation comes from facilities situated on bodies of water along the country's borders.

The use of the water resources in Switzerland demands for a concession by the local authorities. The municipality has the right to grant the usage-right of the waters in its area and its decision has to be approved by the government of the corresponding canton. The decision of the municipality regarding the assignment of the water-usage rights should be taken in favor of the applicant that ensures the public interest the most and presents the most appropriate usage of the waters

The hydropower sector of the country is also supported by the financial incentives and policies introduced by the government. Hydro plants of up to 10 MW installed capacity are provided financial incentives to help them recover the power plant’s cost. The government has also introduced a “Renewable Energy” action plan to support the development of this sector.
