Terrorist activity and the after-effects of the attempted military coup in 2016 will act as a drag on Turkey's tourism industry in 2016 and beyond. Inbound arrivals from prime source markets such as Europe have struggled, while political tensions with Russia, its second most vital source market, have also harmed the sector. Tourism will remain integral to Turkey's economy as agents target new source markets, and growth will return towards 2020 as geopolitical tensions begin to ease. Investment in hotel capacity and transport infrastructure will be strong amid government support, and the country will receive a boost from a decline in tourism to rival markets, such as Egypt.

Key Updates And Forecasts


- Total inbound arrivals are set to grow by 1.1% on average between 2016 and 2020, reaching 38.0mn. This is lower than previously forecast, indicating the damaging effect of recent terrorist attacks in the country.

- The hotel and restaurant industry value is set to grow to USD20.0bn by 2020. This may be a consequence of the surge in popularity for golfing holidays in the country and will be boosted by higher inbound tourism by the end of the forecast period.
