BMI View: Iraq is fundamentally an attractive telecoms market owing to its large population, a mobilepenetration rate of just 85%, and the recent allocation of 3G licences. However, internal turmoil as thegovernment struggles to contain Islamic State in the northwest of the country and cope with the steep fall inoil prices in 2014 has severely impacted the telecoms sector through subscription losses, and falling ARPUand revenues. BMI believes the short-term outlook for telecoms operators is grim, as these challenges areset to remain in place over the next year, at least. Nevertheless, over the longer term we expect stronggrowth in the mobile sector, particularly for 3G services given the lack of affordable wireline broadbandalternatives.

Key Data

-The mobile market contracted by 9.6% y-o-y and mobile revenues declined in Q215 as the securitysituation continues to take its toll.
