Alternative Midstream Infrastructure Drives Short-term Growth

This research service for the positive displacement (PD) pumps in the US tight oil market identifies short-term opportunities in the alternative midstream infrastructure segment other than pipelines. Chapters include business insights on what you should know; growth insights on why you should care; and profit insights on what you should do. The study highlights emerging aspects for tight oil in the US, identifies key oil & gas partners in the respective shale plays, and points out key transportation projects for gear/vane pumps. Opportunities for PD pump applications in the tight oil value chain and suitable market strategies for PD pump companies looking to penetrate this market are outlined.

Executive Summary

- Winning strategies to penetrate this growing market involve customized approaches, tiered strategies, early market moves, and niche application trials to solve immediate customer needs.
- Limitations and delays in moving tight oil to refineries challenge midstream infrastructure to find alternatives, which creates tremendous opportunities for positive displacement (PD) pumps.
- The tight oil boom from the United States promises to create lucrative opportunities in the midstream infrastructure, ending the era of cheap oil.

What are Mega Trends and Micro Booms?

Mega Trends are global, sustained, and macroeconomic forces of development that impact business, economy, society, cultures, and personal lives, thereby defining our future world and its increasing pace of change. Time frames for Mega Trends are xx to xxyears.
Contributing to these Mega Trends are many smaller but compelling trends that are defined in time frames of 1 year and can offer immediate opportunities for companies that know how to identify and capitalize on them. These are Micro Booms, and the Frost & Sullivan IPC team is showcasing a series of Micro Boom opportunities in 2012.

Product Definitions

PD (positive displacement) Pump : A PD pump causes fluid to move by first trapping a fixed amount and then forcing it into the discharge pipe. These pumps produce a constant flow at a steady speed, regardless of the discharge pressure. PD pumps encompass rotary, reciprocating, and peristaltic pumps. Rotary pumps include screw, progressive cavity, lobe, and gear pumps. Reciprocating pumps comprise piston and diaphragm pumps.
Gear Pump : A gear pump uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement. This type of pump is one of the most common for hydraulic fluid power applications.
Screw Pump : A screw pump is a more complicated type of rotary pump that uses 2 or 3 screws with opposing thread—1 screw turns clockwise and the other counterclockwise. The screws are mounted on parallel shafts, on which gears mesh so the shafts turn together and everything stays in place. The screws turn on the shafts and drive fluid through the pump.
Vane Pump : A rotary vane pump is a positive-displacement pump that consists of vanes mounted to a rotor that rotates inside of a cavity. In some cases, these vanes are of variable length and/or tensioned to maintain contact with the walls as the pump rotates.
