By early 2015 the number of mobile telephone subscribers had grown to around 113 million, with mobile penetration of 114% in this country of almost 100 million people. The Philippines mobile market initially took off in a big way back in 2000. This report looks at the market in which this growth has taken place. It also describes another related phenomenon the surprising performance of SMS in the Philippines. At its peak, around two billion SMS messages were being sent every day in the Philippines. Although this market has eased somewhat, the country reportedly generates the largest SMS volume in the world.

The Philippines accounted for more than 10% of global SMS at one stage; at the same time, its mobile operators were generating the highest proportion of non-voice revenues in the world. An indication of the constant change in the mobile market has been the way the Philippines SMS market has started to decline. Internet-based social networks have begun to have a major impact on SMS usage and this pattern has continued. There is a major transition taking place as the impact of faster, new generation mobile networks is being felt by the market. This report takes a broad look at the vibrant mobile sector in the Philippines and provides some pertinent statistics.

The Philippines has an energetic media sector. Ownership has been predominantly private and freedom of the press is guaranteed by the Constitution. The first television broadcast was back in 1953. Cable TV was launched as long ago as 1969, but it has only been in recent years that it has really started to grow, substantially boosted by the prospect of bundling broadcasting with internet, telephony and other services. This report also provides a brief overview of the Philippines television broadcasting market.

Key developments:
Smart was leading the deployment of 4G LTE mobile services across the country, with its 4G network covering more than 85% of the population;
Globe Telecom was also expanding its 4G LTE coverage, but was continuing to trail Smart;
both Smart and Globe had already launched upgrades of their respective 4G LTE networks;
by early 2015 PLDT's mobile units were continuing to hold around 60% of the country's total mobile subscriber base;
PLDT's strong market position after its acquisition of Digitel has slipped to some extent;
at the same time, Globe has been notably successful in its push to increase market share;
Both Smart and Globe have introduced direct carrier billing for apps, games, books, magazines, music and movies;
the Philippines has a program to move its broadcasting market to fully digital by 2015;
the country has selected the ISDB-T platform for its terrestrial transmission standard;
PLDT has introduced TVolution, a set-top box capable of accessing the internet and networking with other devices;
the NTC was moving slowly on the planned auction of 3G spectrum handed back to the government by PLDT in mid-2012.
