With considerable justification Malaysia is continuing to promote itself as an Information Technology hub in the Asia region. Whilst there had been a good response at a corporate level, for some time the wider community was not really embracing technology. In relative terms, there had been a surprisingly low interest in broadband internet. This has changed. Mainly on the back of the widespread adoption of mobile wireless broadband services, there has been a huge increase in the size of the broadband market. Wireless broadband in its different forms is being widely offered by the operators as they increase the capability of their networks. Another major push towards wider broadband adoption has been prompted by Telekom Malaysia's roll-out of its fibre-based High-Speed Broadband (HSBB) network. By mid-2015 the household broadband penetration in Malaysia had reached 67.5%. This report looks at the extent to which high-speed internet access is developing in the country.

Key developments:
Telekom Malaysia augmented its high speed broadband (HSBB) network infrastructure with EMC SMARTS in late 2014.
The Malaysian government has released a National Internet of Things (IoT) Strategic Roadmap.
MyRepublic, a start-up fibre broadband provider in Singapore, expects to enter the Malaysian market by mid-2016.
Microsoft and Telekom Malaysia announced a partnership to deliver cloud-based digital services.
ZTE entered a partnership with U Mobile for the development of 5G mobile broadband technologies.
TM's UniFi service had signed up 782,000 customers by mid-2015.
