Austria's mobile market has undergone considerable changes in recent quarters. 3 Austria has acquired the network and assets of Orange, so consolidating the market to three network operators, while number of MVNOs and resellers is growing steadily. Part of this growth is due to regulatory concessions by which 3 Austria, as part of its Orange take-over, must provide 30% of network capacity to support up to 16 MVNOs. The competitive environment has led to relatively low ARPU for operators, and some of the region's lowest tariffs for consumers. The 3G networks have seen impressive growth in subscriber uptake, largely at the expense of existing GSM offerings. The incumbent's mobile division, A1, has expanded to Eastern Europe to incorporate lucrative neighbouring markets. Mobile broadband has shown extraordinary growth in recent years, supported by LTE networks which now provide about 45% population coverage. The late-2013 auction of spectrum in several bands, raising some 2 billion, will go far to expand mobile broadband in rural areas and improve capacity nationally.
This report examines Austria's mobile market, providing historical and current subscriber statistics, an overview of key operators, an analysis of emerging technologies and data services, and forecasts for ARPU and subscribers.

Key developments:

T-Mobile Austria increases LTE data rates to 150Mb/s; LTE available to almost half the population; mobile TV streaming success with more than 50 channels available; multi-spectrum auction delivers 2 billion for the state; strong subscriber growth keeping mobile sector revenue steady; Telekom Austria adds M2M platforms; UPC signs up as an MVNO on H3's network; mobile data traffic grows solidly; A1 boasts 88% LTE coverage in Vienna and surrounds, trials LTE Advanced; retailer Spar launches as an MVNO; 3 Austria buys Orange; regulator's market data to September 2013; operator data to Q4 2013, market developments to April 2014.
