Compared with most of its Asian neighbours, the Philippines has moved slowly on the adoption of internet. Nevertheless, this situation is changing rapidly. Of the estimated 45% of the population that made up the internet-user population coming into 2015, a large proportion of these were already using a high-speed broadband connection to go online. In early 2015 available statistics suggested that more than 80% of all internet connections were broadband-based services, representing a major shift in the broadband presence in the Philippines in recent years. Broadband subscription penetration as a proportion of the population was still only around 9%. This report looks at the various projects and initiatives as the Philippine government continues to encourage the development of broadband in the country. The report also provides information on the wider internet market in the country.

Key developments:
continuing growth in mobile internet usage, with a big surge in mobile broadband access;
broadband subscriber numbers were growing strongly (around 15% annual increase);
broadband penetration was still less than 10%;
PLDT continued to extend its FttH footprint;
PLDT held more than 50% of the country's residential broadband market in 2014;
WiMAX operator Liberty was continuing to struggle financially coming into 2015;
both Smart and Globe were pushing on with development of cloud computing platforms
both PLDT and Globe were expanding their data centre presence and capacity;
the Philippines was moving to legislate on the issue of minimum broadband speeds.

Companies mentioned in this report include:
PLDT, Smart Communications, Globe Telecom, Liberty Telecom (Wi-Tribe), EasyCall, Altimax, Bayantel, Bell Telecom, Broadband Philippines, Meridian Telekoms, Vega Telecom.
