BMI View:
The 2014 floods have left Bosnia's residential, transport and energy infrastructure severely affected and extensive development projects should be implemented. Currently, signs of intense activity have been shown in the transport and energy infrastructure industries, backed by European and non- European multilateral organisations. The residential sub-sector has recovered as the latest number of completed dwellings, residential building permits issued and dwellings planned for construction has increased. We forecast the construction industry to grow 1.7% y-o-y in 2016, downgrading our 2016 growth projection as a real decline (2.2% y-o-y) of the gross value added was recorded in the construction sector in Q116.
Latest Updates and Structural Trends

- A new three-year IMF credit agreement with the state's government is pending on September 7 2016 (SeeNews).

- 20 energy projects, valued at more than EUR2bn, are currently under development in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The estimated value of investment in the development and rehabilitation of the electricity transmission network is expected to reach EUR279mn by 2020. Projects worth more than EUR1.5bn for new coal-fired power plants were signed in May 2016 (UK Department for International Trade).

- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) plans to invest EUR200mn in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016 and a similar amount in 2017 in order to unlock the country's growth potential, the lender's president Suma Chakrabarti stated in August 2016 (SeeNews).

- The unwillingness of the Bosnian authorities to approve a national environmental strategy means that about EUR50mn of Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) funds, offered by the EU for the development of the environmental sector, are lost every year, Viktor Bjelic, the deputy president of the Banja Luka-based Centre for Environmental Protection NGO said in August 2016 (Balkan Insight).

- German development bank KfW plans to provide Bosnia and Herzegovina with EUR300mn for energy projects in the next few years (bne intellinews).
