BMI View: With a lack of below-ground rewards, Chile suffers from a deficit of hydrocarbon supplies anda high dependence on imported energy feedstock. Chile's most immediate opportunities lie in the expansionof their LNG import facilities as a means to meet growing domestic demand. On a longer-term basis, Chileis exploring the possibility of tapping its unconventional resources in the Magallanes region, though wecaution its development has grown increasingly unlikely within a lower oil price environment.

Key trends and developments in the Chilean oil & gas sector are:

-On September 4, Chile's national oil company (NOC) ENAP submitted an environmental impactassessment to local authorities for its 60-well drilling plan. This USD204mn project will include bothexploration and development wells in the Magallanes region and will target unconventional natural gasdeposits in the Arenal block.

-On October 9, Spanish contractor Duro Felguera announced it has been awarded a turnkey contract tobuild the Penco-Lirquen liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal in Concepcion Bay. This willbe the country's third import terminal and is expected to start operations by H218. A strategic goal ofPresident Michelle Bachelet, this additional facility will help support growing domestic demand fornatural gas.
