BMI View:

China's huge domestic market is proving a major draw for investors in the country's rapidly developing tourism industry. As household incomes improve and demand for mid-range and high-end accommodation increases, we are seeing significant investment from both domestic and international hotel groups. China is also attracting international visitors, supported by the gradual relaxation of stringent visa requirements and an ever-expanding range of regional and global travel connections. The government is increasingly supportive of the tourism industry, and while declines in travel from several key markets will dampen growth rates, the outlook for China's tourism market is positive overall.

Key Updates And Forecasts


- The Wanda Group continues to invest in leisure and tourism spaces in China. After opening the Nanchang Wanda Park in May 2016 (a rival to the newly opened Disneyland in Shanghai), in September 2016 the group opened the first phase of a USD5.1bn tourism development at Hefei, which includes a shopping mall, theme parks and hotels. Accor and Wanda have three hotels at the park, under the Pullman, Novotel and Mercure brands.

- The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has approved the acquisition of Starwood Hotels Group by Marriot International. The merged hotel group is the largest globally and has announced plans to significantly expand its presence in China, where around 300 hotels are reportedly under development.
