BMI View:

Croatia's insurance market will continue its steady course of growth through the forecast period, underpinned by a relatively robust economic growth outlook. Rising household incomes will drive spending on life insurance products in particular, as well as other discretionary lines such as health insurance, though the non-life market will expand only slightly in absolute terms, as a result of a sluggish motor vehicle segment which currently accounts for about 50% of all non-life premiums written. The persistent barriers to growth will remain in place over the next few years, however. These include a small population, limited demand for non-essential insurance products and the dominance of local insurance giant Croatia Osiguranje. As such we expect the market to draw limited interest from overseas investors or new entrants.

Key Updates And Forecasts

- In August 2016 it was reported that leading indigenous insurance provider Croatia Osiguranje had made further inroads into the neighbouring market of Slovenia, having been given permission by the country's insurance authority to open its first branch in the country. The company is targeting Slovenia as a key market for expansion and is looking to increase its footprint through a mixture of acquisitions and organic growth.
