BMI View:
The growth trajectory of the Mexican consumer electronics market was disrupted by economic challenges including peso depreciation over 2014-2016, but we envisage a return to growth over the medium term. Stronger domestic growth and peso appreciation will result in purchasing power gains that enable vendors to tap first-time buyer opportunities alongside replacement device demand from an expanding and increasingly affluent middle class. There are however arising challenges such as approaching saturation in the smartphone market, and the competition for PC spending from cannibalisation by smartphones.

- Computer Hardware Sales: USD3.5bn in 2016 to USD4.0bn in 2020. There is first time buyer potential and pent-up demand, but the rebound in PC spending will be constrained by smartphones cannibalising tablet, and to a lesser extent, notebook demand.

- AV Sales: USD3.0bn in 2016 to USD3.5bn in 2020. Flat-panel TV sets have volume growth potential due to relatively low penetration rates, which will boost the segment as incomes rise.

- Handset Sales: USD5.9bn in 2016 to USD6.7bn in 2020. Approaching saturation will result in a smartphone volume plateau, but peso appreciation is expected to offset this slowdown through higher average handset prices that will drive segment growth.
