BMI View:

Thailand's plan to reduce its reliance on gas-fired power generation will create opportunities for alternatives such as coal and renewables. However, we highlight that a weak consumption outlook in the coming years could limit infrastructure construction as projects are delayed until demand picks up. Accordingly, we maintain our modest forecast for Thailand's power generation to grow by 3.1% in 2017 and 2.9% in 2018.

Latest Updates And Structural Trends

- Japanese Sumitomo Corp is set to sign an agreement with Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) in 2017 to construct the country's largest gas-fired power plant by capacity (1,400MW), which is valued at approximately USD625mn. The power plant will tap energy-efficient turbines by General Electric. Construction is estimated to begin 2017 and targeted for completion by the end of 2019. It will be built near Bangkok as part of an upgrade to the Bang Pakong Power Plant.

- The EGAT plans to build six new coal-fired power plants by 2025 in a bid to improve its share of the power supply market from 37% to 50%. The six new plants are expected to have a combined capacity of 4,390MW. Two of the plants will be located in the southern provinces of Krabi and Songkhla and are expected to be operational by 2020-2022. Currently, 20% of EGAT's electricity generation is from coalfired power plants, which will increase to 30-35% after the six new facilities become operational.
