As a byproduct in the production process of coke, the output of coal tar changes with the output of coke. In 2010, China’s coke output reached 387.571 million tons, accounting for 61.6% of the world’s total. 9.94 million tons of coal tar was actually recycled in 2010, a 5.74% YoY rise.
The downstream markets of coal tar mainly include coal tar deep-processing (phenol, anthracene, industrial naphthalin, and coal tar pitch), carbon black, substitute for heavy oil and exportation. Among these applications, coal tar consumption for deep processing ranked No.1 with 66.4% of the total consumption volume in 2009, followed by carbon black raw oil sharing 28.1% of the total.
Being considered as a precious resource for chemical products, many deep-processing products of coal tar are among the important raw materials for plastics, synthetic rubber, medicine, and high-temperature-resistant materials. In recent years, coal tar deep-processing projects are carried out continuously, of which the typical ones cover Caofeidian megaton coal tar deep-processing project, one-million-ton coal tar hydrogenation project invested by Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Anyuan Petrochemical Co., Ltd, etc.
With the development of deep-processing projects and the release of newly increased capacity, China’s coal tar deep-processing capability rocketed to 15 million tons in 2010 from 3.1 million tons in 2004.
The report not only analyzes the status quo of coal tar industry, but also lays emphasis on the coal tar deep-processed products, related projects and key areas. What’s more, it highlights the operation of 10 enterprises in coal tar industry, including Shanghai Baosteel Chemical Co., Ltd, JFE Zhenxing Shandong Chemical Company Ltd, Shenmu Tianyuan Chemical Co., Ltd. of Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group, and Shanxi Hongte Coal Chemical Industry Co., Ltd, etc.
Shanghai Baosteel Chemical Co., Ltd is the largest and most competitive coal tar processing enterprise in China, with its product capacities as follows: coal tar 750,000 tons, coke oven gas 3.1 billion m3, crude benzene 250,000 tons, and carbon black 150,000 tons. In 2010, the chemical product output of Shanghai Baosteel Chemical Co., Ltd totaled 933,000 tons and achieved the sales of RMB 9.635 billion.
Jointly established by Shandong Weijiao Group Co., Ltd and JFE Chemical Corporation, JFE Zhenxing Shandong Chemical Company Ltd finished its scale-up project for realizing coal tar capacity of 500,000 tons/year, and put into production in December of 2010.
Shenmu Tianyuan Chemical Co., Ltd. of Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group has long committed itself to the R&D and promotion of medium temperature coal tar lightening project in China. In May 2010, the 500,000-ton/year coal tar lightening equipment independently researched and developed by Tianyuan Chemical put into production.
Shanxi Hongte Coal Chemical Industry Co., Ltd is the only enterprise that can realize industrialized production of coal series needle coke in China, and its 50,000 tons/year coal series needle coke facility realized mass-production in 2007. Additionally, the 100,000 tons/year needle coke equipment under reconstruction since 2008 started pilot run on Apr. 17, 2011. By then, its capacity of coal series needle coke will reach 150,000 tons per year.
