Positioned for Growth in a Time of Uncertainty

Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) monitor clients' IT infrastructure from the vendors' security operating centers (SOCs) to respond to anomalies and threats to data and communications. Customers are attracted to MSSPs because the MSSP maintains a deeper expertise in security and the outsourcing of non-core business functions increases organizational efficiency and can reduce capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX).

Executive Summary

• Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) monitor clients’ IT infrastructure for threats to data and communications and manages the life cycle of information security systems.
• MSSPs can manage information security hardware and software such as intrusion detection systems (IDS), intrusion prevention systems (IPS), firewalls, and antivirus from their security operating centers (SOCs). This enables the MSSP to detect and defend against cyber attacks.
• Clients expect that MSSPs will support a full range of information security products and be vendor agnostic in terms of what equipment they will monitor and/or manage.
• MSSPs will remotely monitor and manage customer premises equipment (CPE) individually. In a hosted model, the MSSP can monitor security services for hosted clients.
• MSSPs will monitor all potential sources of security events including firewalls, IDS/IPS, vulnerability scanners, and security information & event management (SIEM) tools. Other potential sources include monitoring of end-user activity, network activity, and application activity.
• MSSPs help customers reduce operating expenditures (OPEX) on in-house security specialists, while maintaining efficient security management.
• This study excludes professional services except those required for installation of Managed Security Services (MSS).

CEO’s Perspective

1. Increased compliance requirements require special attention.
2. Security may be a candidate for outsourcing if it is not core to the business.
3. Offshore storage of sensitive electronic information can present undue risks.
4. Penalties in vendor contracts will never provide full compensation for security instances.
5. Businesses can outsource to a service provider, but can never outsource responsibility.
