The report (SSMR issue 9/10) includes detailed statistical information on world shipbuilding, including a comment on the latest market developments. In addition, it contains approx. 30 general indicators on maritime economics and transport.

The year 2012 brought a lot of change to the world merchant fleet. Since the economic and financial crisis, far fewer new orders had been placed than tonnage delivered by the shipyards, shows ISL’s latest report “World Shipbuilding and Shipbuilders”. According to figures provided by Clarkson Research Services Limited (CRSL), only 52 million dwt were ordered in 2012. This volume is 33 per cent lower than during the previous year and only one third of the order levels of the boom years 2003-2008 with volumes of 150 million dwt on average. In the first half of 2013, however, order activities gained momentum again and are above the previous year’s level.

Due to market conditions, ship breaking in 2012 reached an all-time high with 59 million dwt, surpassing 2011 volumes by 22 per cent. Ship deliveries dropped for the first time since more than a decade with 150 million dwt compared to 162 million dwt in 2011. This trend continues in the first half of 2013 with only 61 million dwt of new tonnage.

The world order book continues its decline, putting the shipbuilding industry under pressure. With a volume of 231 million dwt by mid-2013, the world order book was 17 per cent smaller than in 2012. Since its peak in autumn 2008, the total order book has decreased by 60 per cent. Still, the total order book represents around 15 per cent of existing fleet capacity. In the bulk carrier and container ship segments we still see an oversized order book with 18 per cent each. Overcapacity will hence be an issue in these segments during the coming years.
