BMI View: Hong Kong IT spending is expected to reach US Dollar 5.5bn in 2012, up 5%, with BMI's projection unchanged although a potential cooling of the mainland Chinese economy as a result of monetary tightening would quickly spread to Hong Kong. Key segments of the economy such as financial services are also still investing in modernisation as Hong Kong strives to maintain its regional hub status and meet competition from regional rivals such as Shanghai. The IT industry will also be sustained by initiatives encouraging the integration of Hong Kong's economy with its larger neighbour and the abolition of taxes on cross-border trade. Demand to utilise new technologies such as virtualisation and cloud computing will drive spending on IT services.

Headline Expenditure Projections
Computer hardware revenues : US Dollar 2.3bn in 2011 to US Dollar 2.5bn in 2012, +5% in US dollar terms. Projection in US dollar terms unchanged with revenues supported by demand for tablets and ultrabooks.
Software revenues : US Dollar 1.3bn in 2011 to US Dollar 1.4bn in 2012, +5% in US dollar terms. Projection in US dollar terms unchanged as the software-as-a-service (SaaS) model enjoys increasing popularity in Hong Kong
IT Services revenues : US Dollar 1.6bn in 2011 to US Dollar 1.6bn in 2012, +5% in US dollar terms. Projection in US dollar terms unchanged with strong segments including financial services, government, telecoms, tourism and retail.
Risk/Reward Ratings: Hong Kong's score was 69.4 out of 100.0. Hong Kong ranks third in our latest Asia RRR table, behind Australia and Singapore, but ahead of other regional peers such as South Korea, the Philippines and Malaysia. The country ranked only sixth for its IT Industry, with a relatively modest score of 48, but its overall ranking was boosted by a high Country Structure score of 95.

Key Trends & Developments

The IT industry will be supported by initiatives encouraging the integration of Hong Kong's economy with mainland China and the abolition of taxes on cross-border trade.

In July 2011, the Hong Kong government announced a plan to incrementally grow its cloud computing environment over the next few years. The proposed government cloud will include three environments: a private cloud operated by the government, dedicated outsourced private clouds, housed in secure datacentres, and public clouds.
.. Meanwhile are also looking to Ultrabooks as a new growth area.
