BMI View: We forecast IT spending in Hong Kong will reach HKD44.9bn in 2013, growth of 5.5% in local
currency terms from 2012. This outlook , however, depends on a stable global economic outlook, given the
interconnectedness of the economy. Of particular importance is the performance of mainland China, given
the intricacies of the Hong Kong-China economic relationship. Regardless of the macroeconomic outlook
there will be key growth based on the launch of Windows 8, touchscreen tablets and the trend to mobility
will fuel demand to utilise new technologies such as virtualisation and cloud computing. Key sectors of the
economy, including financial services, are also still investing in modernisation as Hong Kong strives to
maintain its regional hub status and meet competition from regional rivals such as Shanghai.
Meanwhile, the government should continue to boost spending as part of its Digital 21 programme.
Headline Expenditure Projections
Computer hardware sales: HKD19.1bn in 2012 to HKD20.0bn in 2013, +4.5% in local currency terms.
Forecast unchanged this quarter, with growth driven by demand for tablets and lower-cost ultrabooks.
