Although basic chemicals production in the UK rose by 4% on the month in August, output in the final quarter of the year is likely to drop back as a result of the temporary shutdown of the Grangemouth petrochemicals plant in the second half of October. The total period of time from when the shutdown of the petrochemicals site began to when it will become fully operational is estimated to be around 4 weeks. Elsewhere, German chemical production shrank, but a closer look shows that this was largely due to a sharp 5% drop in basic chemicals output. Meanwhile, French chemical production fell further whilst output in Italy rebounded after a marked fall in July.
