Emerging Markets Weekly Economic Briefing

Overall, emerging market GDP growth in 2014 is forecast to reach 4.5%, up from 4.2% in 2013, but there is likely to be increased segregation between the more successful countries and the more vulnerable. Political risks will also be in focus with important elections in Brazil, India, Turkey, Indonesia, Thailand and South Africa. We expect Chinese growth to level off in 2014 at around 7.3%, still very respectable but modest by recent standards. Its banking sector may suffer further liquidity squeezes this year, resulting in spikes in interbank rates and other signs of banking sector stress. But as long as the risks can be contained, Chinese growth may surprise on the upside. The other BRIC economies - Brazil, Russia and India - will not fare as well, with GDP expanding at below-trend rates. And we expect a sharp and widening contrast between the more prudently managed and policy-cushioned economies of Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile, an uncertain and stagnant Brazil, and the politically-driven economies of Argentina and Venezuela.
