The Austrian economy shifted from being one of the weakest-performing economies in the Eurozone in Q2 to one of the strongest in Q3. GDP rose 0.5% on the quarter in Q3, led by domestic demand, and the year-on-year growth rate accelerated to 1.7%. The stronger-than-expected outturn means we have nudged up our growth forecast for 2016 to 1.5% (from 1.3% previously) and for 2017 to 1.2% (from 0.9%).

Domestic demand continues to drive the recovery. But rising inflation, slower earnings growth and a small pick-up in unemployment weakened retail sales in Q3 which slowed to 0.3%. These factors, and with the boost from the tax reform enacted in January losing some of its impetus, threaten the domestically-driven recovery.

The outcome of the US election is unlikely to have a major adverse impact on growth, since Austria's exports to the US account for only a small proportion of overall trade. Nonetheless, we have trimmed our medium-term growth projections because of the mounting external uncertainties.
