Indonesia remained fifth in global manmade fibre/filament supplies and accounted for 3.4% of produc tion and 2.6% in consumption of the same in 2011. During the year, it produced 1.41 million tons of manmade fibre/filament and consumed about 1.57 million tons during the year. It is one of the major importers and consumers of cotton.
Indonesia accounts for 13.7% of world’s viscose staple fibre supply having an advantage of domestic wood and pulp supply. It was the second largest viscose staple producer in 2011 and largest exporter overtaking China. Over 29% of world VSF export originates from Indonesia. In PFY, Indonesia ranked fifth in production during 2011 and seventh in PSF. As exporter, Indonesia ranked fifth in PFY, seventh in VFY and ninth in PSF.

During 2011, manmade production increased 2.2% while consumption rose 2.6%. Manmade fi-bre/filament production has been slowing down rapidly in Indonesia in the last 10 years.
