Therapy and Monitoring Advances Help Achieve Long-term Relief from Allergy

This research service highlighted the advances in allergy treatments and management on allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and allergic asthma. It listed the key developers and product status in pharmacological treatment, immunotherapy, health supplements and continuous monitoring for treatment and management of allergy diseases followed by technology drivers and challenges for the technology segments. Impact assessment and opportunity evaluation of the technology sectors were listed and described described. Patent landscape analysis and key patents were compiled and highlighted.

Scope of Research

• Allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, food-drug-insect allergy, anaphylaxis, urticaria have been increasing in developed and developing countries. The increasing prevalence of allergic diseases have led it to be recognized as a healthcare problem. Unpleasant allergic conditions which are usually regarded as the minor disorders result in low quality of life for the patients and affect their families too. The allergic conditions affect sleep qualities which may impact learning behavior and memory function in children, and affect productivity in adults. Furthermore, certain allergic conditions such as anaphylaxis and asthma can lead to high risk of fatality, therefore, it is now regarded as public health concerns.
• The present research service ‘Innovation in Allergy Treatments’ highlights advances and innovative treatment/management in allergic rhinitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis along with a detailed listing of key industry participants. The research service covers a list of promising allergy treatments and monitoring, which improve allergic symptoms and/or prevent allergy. For instance, pharmacological therapy, immunotherapy, health supplements and continuous monitoring,
• This research service indicates the trends in the allergy treatments industry and also provides an assessment of key drivers, and challenges within the allergic rhinitis, asthma and atopic dermatitis segment with year of impact analysis. The technology development intensity and adoption footprint of advanced allergy treatments in different regions are highlighted. Partnership and alliances of the key industry players are listed and compared. Along with this, R&D initiatives and clusters that support and promote technology advancement in allergy treatments have been profiled.

Key Findings

1. A global lifestyle has led to the introduction of certain allergenic species to newer environments that have never witnessed them previously. These include pollens from many plant species that are new to certain regions , for instance ragweed pollen, originally from North America and have been spreading in Europe in the past few years. Furthermore, the climate changes due to global warming may appear to be another factor that will allow spreading of new allergens into different regions in the future.
2. Allergen specific immunotherapy has shown to potentially improve quality of life, reduce long-term costs and burden of allergies. Several appropriately designed and powered clinical trials have proven its good safety profile and effectiveness in allergic rhinitis, asthma and venom allergy.
3. Immunomodulation therapies with biologics which are based on elucidation of molecular and cellular mechanism have been widely explored to treat allergies. However, only few of those are currently in clinical trials mostly at Phase 1 and Phase stages, including spleen tyrosine kinase (syk) inhibitor and Interleukin 13 (IL-13) inhibitor.
4. Improvement in ergonomic design and simple and effective operation procedures of asthma inhalers and nebulizers are observed in the recent years. This will allow ease of operation for instantaneous treatment of allergic asthma attack and to ensure sufficient therapeutic drugs reach the airway to achieve optimal treatment.
5. Mobile acoustic respiratory monitoring platforms that are based on integrated mobile sensors and signal processing software to monitor changes in lung function and treatment response will be able to facilitate ongoing asthma monitoring needs. Such innovative asthma monitoring solutions ultimately lead to better patient outcomes, fewer hospital visits and reduced healthcare costs.

Allergen types
• Ingested: Food, liquids
• Inhalants: Pollen, chemicals, dust mite, animal fur, mould
• Drug: Medication allergies
• Insect: Venom allergy
• Contact: Metals, rings, watch, dyes, chemicals

• The 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act in US has included several policies related to food allergies. For instance, the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Management Act. The Food Safety Modernization Act execute food allergy requirements for every food company in the United States, as well as foreign exporters of food to the United States with more stringent regulations.
• Even though allergen immunotherapy has been available for over a decade, its effectiveness in allergic rhinitis, asthma and venom allergy was established recently with proper clinical trials. New strategies for various other forms of allergen immunotherapy currently under evaluation include the use of adjuvant, peptides, recombinant/ engineered allergens, and DNA-conjugated allergens.
• Treatment of allergic asthma is particularly challenging whereby majority of biologics only manage to be partially adequate or inadequate for management of asthma therapy. Combination of multiple drugs, biological and pharmaceutical compounds with integrative approaches would be required to alleviate the asthma conditions.

Allergy Treatment and Management
Currently, there are no treatment modalities that can cure allergy permanently. The management with medications after contact with allergens or during seasonal attack will be required regularly to alleviate the symptoms. Therefore extensive efforts in innovative prevention and monitoring approach to provide prophylactic treatment for allergies are underway to circumvent the unmet needs in allergy treatment.

Pharmacological Therapy
Current allergy treatments mainly rely on pharmacological therapy for symptomatic relief. These include:
• Inhalers
• Nebulizers
• Therapeutics

Immunotherapy has been introduced for allergy treatments to achieve long-term relief from the treatments and for preventive purposes. The therapy is based on immunomodulation with following strategies:
• Allergen specific
• Non-allergen specific

Health Supplements
Dietary supplements have emerged as the natural remedies for alleviations and prevention of allergy diseases, for instance:
• Herbal extracts
• Probiotic
• Beta-glucan

Continuous Monitoring
Continuous monitoring of allergy is crucial to ensure adherence to medications, allergy shots and for emergency rescue during sudden attack of the allergies. The tools available for remote and continuous monitoring are from:
• Mobile apps
• Mobile health device
• Data management software
