Overview of Stent Technologies - Types of stents – Materials

Bare Metal Stents (BMS)
BMS have been in clinical use since the 1970s. The most commonly used BMS are made of 316L stainless steel. Recently, alloys of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti). Have been used to make BMS. Nitinol, an alloy of Ni and Ti, known popularly as a memory metal, is used as BMS, as it can ‘remember’ the previous shape. This property is advantageous as the blood vessel constricts and expands.

Drug Eluting Stents and Drug Coated Stents
Drug-eluting stents (DES) are designed to secrete immunosuppressant drugs such as Paclitaxel, Everolimus and so on, to prevent restenosis or recurrence of conduit blockage. A modification of DES is the drug-coated stents (DCS), where the drug is coated on the stent surface, rather than be bound to a polymer that elutes the drug, like in DES.

Biodegradable and Bioabsorbable stents
Bio-absorbable stents are made of a biodegradable polymer such as poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), poly glycolic acid (PGA), poly caprolactone (PCL) and so on. Biodegradable stents are made of either polymers or with metals such as magnesium (Mg) and Zinc (Zn), which, depending on the composition, can degrade with time.
