The world of building controls has started to change in the last couple of years as monitoring has begun to move to the Cloud, and it is now being followed by control and optimization services. The convergence of networks is slow, but more and more intelligent buildings are being planned and built and more and more intelligent controls are being designed and used. This should culminate in an exploding market for Cloud services and - should the availability of Cloud space be maintained and grow in unison – the potential for providers of Cloud-type services is exponential.

The future convergence of networks will make monitoring and control easier for a whole building or campus, but, meanwhile, there are many niche applications blossoming in the marketplace. New builds are currently preferred to retrofit for Cloud service application, as legacy networks can cause many difficulties. During the study, it was found that the first applications moving to the Cloud are CCTV storage, access monitoring, and energy monitoring. Building controls, as a new addition to these Cloud monitoring services, is expected to be a flourishing market in building services in the Cloud, as intelligent building networks become more sophisticated and integrated, new types of service provider partnerships are formed, and energy optimization becomes a priority. Contrary to many software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, for example for company emails, where around 80% are using the public Cloud, building services are rarely found using the public Cloud at the moment.

The majority of current Cloud building services are provided by individual companies and mainly in a private Cloud (not using the public internet) and some in a hybrid configuration (part private/part public). This is expected to change slowly as end-users learn to comprehend the security of their data, but public Clouds may never be accepted as the optimum solution in this field. BSRIA forecast that the World BEMS /BACS, CCTV and Access Controls market for cloud based monitoring will grow at 43% CAGR from US$1 billion in 2012 to US$3 billion in 2015, reaching a penetration of around 19%. The estimate market value includes software, Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) & Hybrid Video Recorders, Network Video Recorders (NVR), monitors and work stations.

Security of data is still the most important factor affecting end-users choice to move to the Cloud but concerns also include the different regulations for data storage and data privacy in different countries, mobile technologies (for access to and control of the data), and proprietary systems. Drivers include global incentives on energy monitoring & control, the increase in IP convergence, and increasing data storage requirements - and the greening of buildings in general.
